Week 6 - Day 3

*Garlic, onion, leeks, and chives (members of the allium family) contain the phytochemical
"allyl sulfide," which acts as a natural antibiotic, antioxidant, and anti-carcinogen (anti-cancer).
Learn more about leeks on page 116 of the Healthy Home Ec book.

*Carrots, used in today's recipe, contain "carotenoids"
which also act as anti-carcinogens and antioxidants.
They are also rich in Vitamin A.  (see page 117)

I love being able to gather my foods from my backyard.
But with gardening also comes lots of work in late summer and autumn
to gather the harvest.
When the fruits and vegetables are ready, they must be gathered in.
"Consider the ant and be wise.
Without any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest."  (Proverbs 6:7-8)
Luke 10:2 says, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few."
One day, God will "harvest" the earth, and gather His children to Himself.
Are we sharing the love of Christ and the truth of God's Word,
being laborers of the Gospel,
to bring all into the family of God so that the harvest will be plentiful?
Something to think about.

Gather your supplies and ingredients.

My basil plant did well this year.
You'll be learning about herb gardening in Week 16
and vegetable gardening in Week 17.

Remove the roots and stems of the leeks and carrot.

Peel the shallot in the same way as the onion.

Remove the skins.

They are now ready to be sliced.
You can use a food processor, manual shredder, or by hand.

Follow step 5 on page 83.

Boil the correct amount of water in the tea kettle.

Peel...

...and slice the potatoes.

Add the boiling water and potatoes.

Stir to combine.

Add the remaining ingredients, stirring after each ingredient to combine.

Slice the fresh herbs...

...and add once the soup is cooked.

Add the dried herbs.
(All the herbs in this recipe could be fresh if you have them available.)

Serve steaming hot.

This soup goes great with a salad,
cheese slices and crackers,

or apple slices.

Revelation 14:15-16 tells us of a time still future to us when
all of God's children have come into His family,
and the "harvest of the earth" is ready,
when God gathers us to Himself.

"And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud.
'Put in your sickle, and reap, for the hour to reap has come,
for the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.'
So he who sat on the cloud swung his sickle across the earth,
and the earth was reaped."

Revelation 14:17-20 tells of the fate of those who are not God's children.
