Week 4 - Day 5

*Do you know:
~what makes the saying true, that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away?"
~what God's Word tells us about apples that should remind us of His love for us?

Find out in the Healthy Home Ec book on page 64.

I didn't get any apples on my trees last year because of a late spring frost,
but this year my tree is loaded with apples!
The branches are bending down and touching the ground!
So it's time to make apple crisp!

Fill a bowl with cold water.
Squeeze half a lemon, or use the left-over lemon juice from week 4 day3
and add it to the water.
The acidity will help prevent the peeled apples from turning brown.

Get your supplies and other ingredients ready.

Peel the apples.

Place the peeled apples in the lemon water until they are all ready.

In another bowl, combine the remaining ingredients as described in the Healthy Home Ec book.
Be sure to check measurements and amounts.
(You can always leave out nuts if anyone in your family is allergic to them.
If you purchased whole nuts, you can chop them in a strong blender or food processor.)

Drain the apples.

Arrange apples in the baking dish.

Add the topping.

Bake as directed.

The finished product:

Serve by itself, or with all natural Vanilla Bean ice cream (without preservatives).

"Keep me as the apple of Your eye..."  Ps.17:8

See you in the next lesson!

Week 4 - Day 4

* Ps.90:12:  "Teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom."

* Ps. 19:1:  "The heavens declare the glory of God
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork."

The days are growing shorter now.
The geese are flying overhead every morning and evening,
preparing for their long flight south.
The days still feel like summer,
but autumn is in the air.
I don't know what season you are in now,
but here we're nearing the end of summer.
Just wanted to share these pictures with you that manifest the glory of God.
(These were taken from my backyard.)

Get all your supplies and ingredients ready.
This meal reminds me of autumn, when the squash are in season.
Find out what nutrients are in squash in the Healthy Home Ec book.

Have your instructor help you cut the squash, as the shell is quite hard.

Scoop out the seeds.
An ice cream scoop works well for this.

Add water to the baking dish.
(I noticed in the supply list in the Healthy Home Ec book that a baking dish for apples was added.
Originally I was going to add baked apples to this meal,
but decided not to.
So disregard that instruction.
Same goes for the whisk.)

Bake as directed in the Healthy Home Ec book.

Scrub the potatoes.
Leave the skins on.

Pierce the skins to allow steam to escape.

Place directly on oven rack
next to the squash.

As the squash and potatoes cook, brown the meat.

Add the onion.

Add the spices as listed in the Healthy Home Ec book.
(Not all are shown here.)

Add the apples and raisins.
Cook until apples are tender, but not mushy.
Remove from the heat and set aside if it's ready before the squash and potatoes.

Re-heat the meat mixture if necessary,
and fill the squash cavities.

Make sure the potatoes are done.
You can test them with a fork to make sure the insides are soft.
If not, keep baking them. You can turn the heat up on the oven.
Once they are done, slice across the top from end to end,
then squish the potato, end to end, toward the center
to open the potato.
Top with butter, salt, and pepper if desired.

Enjoy your family tonight.
